The Society of Typographic Aficionados<\/a>\u00a0(@typesociety<\/a>) is organizing Font Aid VI: Aster Affects<\/a>. \u00a0They’re looking for submissions (deadline: Saturday, 17 November 2012) of a single asterisk glyph. \u00a0This project will produce a symbol typeface of asterisks, submitted by type designers from around the world. \u00a0Sales of the resultant typeface will help raise funds for Red Cross<\/a>\u00a0(@RedCross<\/a>)\u00a0relief efforts after the events of Hurricane Sandy. \u00a0As of the moment I write this post, over 100 designers<\/a> from more than 20 countries have submitted designs, including myself!<\/p>\n

Update:<\/strong>\u00a0In early January 2013, @typesociety<\/a>\u00a0posted a preview<\/a><\/strong> of the asterisk symbol font, in progress.<\/p>\n

Update\u00a015 Apr 2013:<\/strong>\u00a0The symbol font Aster Affects<\/a> is now available on the SOTA Store<\/a>! \u00a0Over 250 designers from 41 countries contributed glyphs to the project. Behind the scenes, volunteers Neil Summerour<\/a>\u00a0(@<\/em>positype<\/a>), Delve Withrington<\/a>\u00a0(@<\/em>delvew<\/a>), and Grant Hutchinson<\/a>\u00a0(@<\/em>splorp<\/a>) compiled, assembled, and tested what would become the final typeface.<\/em>\u00a0@johnlyttle<\/a>\u00a0posted an image on flickr of all the asterisks<\/a> in the font.<\/p>\n

Update December 2013:<\/strong>\u00a0I also submitted a glyph for Font Aid VII<\/a> to support relief efforts in the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan.<\/p>\n

Here’s an image of what I submitted. \u00a0This design was based on the aesthetic of one of my typeface ideas,\u00a0sitting on the sidelines, waiting to be worked on. Simple wavy curves and angles, started from unexpectedly drawing a nice V that I liked. \u00a0At small sizes, the curves disappear, of course; I think I like that. \u00a0With more time, I’d probably make subtle adjustments and actually review proofs. It’ll likely end up in that typeface, once it comes off the sidelines.<\/p>\n
