{"id":179,"date":"2013-02-27T13:36:47","date_gmt":"2013-02-27T21:36:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/slantedhall.wordpress.com\/?p=179"},"modified":"2013-02-27T13:36:47","modified_gmt":"2013-02-27T21:36:47","slug":"ibm-1403-inspired-typeface-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/slantedhall.com\/blog\/2013\/02\/27\/ibm-1403-inspired-typeface-update\/","title":{"rendered":"IBM 1403 inspired typeface update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been about a month since I started designing my\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/slantedhall.com\/blog\/2013\/01\/23\/an-ibm-1403-printer-inspired-typeface-in-progress\/\">IBM 1403 printer inspired typeface<\/a>\u00a0(initial post about it with an early sample image). \u00a0The typeface has grown from 52 glyphs covering the A and H print chains to over 730 glyphs, currently in two weights (regular and semibold). \u00a0I created a small caps variant to act as lowercase. \u00a0There is nearly full coverage of most languages that use the Latin alphabet, now, along with a number of symbols and OpenType features. \u00a0Though there&#8217;s a lot of testing to be done (and I don&#8217;t like to talk about release dates ahead of time), I do hope to release this typeface in the first half of 2013.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.organjohann.net\">J\u00f3hann Gunnarsson<\/a>, who maintained the two 1401s in Iceland back in the 1960s, was kind enough to send me a couple printouts that included the modifications to the A and H chains to support parts of the Icelandic alphabet. \u00a0I&#8217;ve included a historical variant of the squished \u00d6 they used, along with \u00c6, \u00d0, and \u00de in the default set. [As a side note, check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.organjohann.net\/english\/index.html\">pipe organ<\/a> that\u00a0J\u00f3hann is building.]\n<p>On 27 Feb 2013, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/wiredenterprise\/author\/cade_metz\/\">Cade Metz<\/a> (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cademetz\">cademetz<\/a>) published the nice article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/wiredenterprise\/2013\/02\/restorations-2\/\"><em>The Strange Beauty of Historic Computers Brought Back From The Dead<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in Wired (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wired\">wired<\/a>) about the <a href=\"http:\/\/ibm-1401.info\">IBM 1401 restoration<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computerhistory.org\">Computer History Museum<\/a> (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ComputerHistory\">ComputerHistory<\/a>).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Someday it would be great to see the various language specific variants of the IBM 1403 printer chains. \u00a0I also hope to see an APL chain, sometime. \u00a0Let me know if you have sample output or photographs of these chains.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update: 21 November 2013:<\/strong>\u00a0The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/slantedhall.com\/fonts\/1403\"><em>1403 Vintage Mono Pro<\/em><\/a>\u00a0typeface has been released and is now available for licensing, going from 52 glyphs to over 1,500, supporting 140+ languages across Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, and Hebrew scripts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update: 16 February 2016:\u00a0<\/strong>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/slantedhall.com\/fonts\/1403\"><em>1403 Vintage Mono Pro<\/em><\/a>\u00a0typeface has been updated, extensively, now over 2,300 glyphs supporting 160+ languages.
