Though attendance seemed lighter this year, it was another great conference. If I am able to manage that trip, I hope to be able to also extend it to attend ATypI Warsaw 2016. Alas, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.namm.org\/exhibit\/russia\">NAMM Musikmesse\u00a0Russia<\/a>\u00a0is being held at the same time, 15\u201318 September 2016. Glad to be able to make it there before the end to help him celebrate. Kyle also designed the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scoutbooks.com\/typecon2015\/\">Local Survival Guide<\/a>. It was one of the best designs I&#8217;ve seen of the local guides for TypeCon. Great job, Kyle!<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"wednesday\"><\/a><strong>Wednesday, 12 August 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I started the conference off with <a href=\"http:\/\/schriftlabor.at\/#whoweare\">Rainer Erich Scheichelbauer<\/a>\u2019s (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mekkablue\">mekkablue<\/a>, @<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/schriftlabor\">schriftlabor<\/a>) workshop on <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.typecon.com\/conferences\/typecon2015\/workshops#color-fonts\">Color Fonts with Glyphs<\/a>.<\/em>\u00a0It was fun to see more folk moving to, or considering,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/glyphsapp.com\/\">Glyphs<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/glyphsapp\">glyphsapp<\/a>) for their type design work. It\u2019s what I use every day.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/feltron.com\/\">Nicholas Felton<\/a> (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/feltron\">feltron<\/a>) designed the brand for the 2015 conference. Alas, I had to skip the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tdc.org\">Type Directors Club<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/typedirectors\">typedirectors<\/a>) sponsored <a href=\"http:\/\/www.typecon.com\/conferences\/typecon2015\/events#wednesday\">event with Nicholas speaking<\/a>. I had a last minute request to teach an impromptu Mazurka Tango class at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boulderdancecoalition.org\/danceList.php?record=65\">American Vernacular Dance<\/a> Wednesday Waltz Etcetera at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.avalonevents.org\">The Avalon Ballroom<\/a> in Boulder, Colorado. Last minute, meaning I was picked up five minutes after agreeing to teach and teaching the class 20 minutes after arrival in Boulder. Here\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3_VUpKHX5RA\">demonstration video of the Mazurka Tango<\/a> (aka Mazurka Clandestine) showing some of the style of dance I taught that evening.<\/p>\n<p>Later that night, there were some good conversations with <a href=\"http:\/\/scottboms.com\/\">Scott Boms<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/scottboms\">scottboms<\/a>), <a href=\"http:\/\/lukedorny.com\/\">Luke Dorny<\/a> (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/luxuryluke\">luxuryluke<\/a>), and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/jtdtype.com\">James Todd<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JTDType\">JTDType<\/a>), until late. I should\u2019ve gone to bed earlier, but it was difficult to leave fun conversation with good folk.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"thursday\"><\/a><strong>Thursday, 13 August 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"View 'TypeCon 2015: Cyrillic for Real workshop with Alexandra Korolkova' on Flickr.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/composerjk\/24314893774\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: right;\" title=\"TypeCon 2015: Cyrillic for Real workshop with Alexandra Korolkova\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1557\/24314893774_803c90f03f_n.jpg\" alt=\"TypeCon 2015: Cyrillic for Real workshop with Alexandra Korolkova\" width=\"320\" height=\"195\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The was a good group of folk in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.typecon.com\/speakers\/alexandra-korolkova\">Alexandra Korolkova<\/a>\u2019s <a style=\"font-style: italic;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.typecon.com\/conferences\/typecon2015\/workshops#cyrillic\">Cyrillic for Real Use<\/a>\u00a0workshop, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dezcom.com\">Chris Lozos<\/a> (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dezcom\">dezcom<\/a>), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thomasphinney.com\">Thomas Phinney<\/a> (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thomasphinney\">thomasphinney<\/a>), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueberry.design\">Anna Konyuhova<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tetradtype.com\">Neil Patel<\/a> (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/neilspatel\">neilspatel<\/a>), and others. Great tips and history about the Cyrillic script. In addition to the useful cheatsheet booklet she gave us, she showed details from previous presentations. A sample of what\u2019s in the booklet can be see in <a href=\"http:\/\/leksandra.livejournal.com\/115861.html\">this livejournal post<\/a>. While practicing drawing Cyrillic, I had my first experience with a pointed pen and learned a little how to use one as a left-hander. Anna wrote about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueberry.design\/pointed-pen-cyrillic\/\">her experience and practice<\/a> after the conference.<\/p>\n<p>I heard great things about John Downer\u2019s 2-day workshop on\u00a0<a style=\"font-style: italic;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.typecon.com\/conferences\/typecon2015\/workshops#sign-painters\">Sign Painters\u2019 Single-Stroke Majuscules<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/stephenrapp.com\">Stephen Rapp<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.typecon.com\/conferences\/typecon2015\/workshops#expressive-brush\"><em>Expressive Brush Lettering<\/em><\/a> workshop. Some nice photos from both workshops are near the top of Helen Lysen\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/helenlysen\/sets\/72157657057620970\/\">TypeCon 2015 photos<\/a>. I also wish I could have attended\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.typecon.com\/conferences\/typecon2015\/education\">Education Forum<\/a>, but the Cyrillic workshop was not to be missed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bantjes.com\">Marian Bantjes<\/a>\u2019\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bantjes\">bantjes<\/a>)\u00a0<a name=\"keynote\"><\/a>keynote\u00a0was an enjoyable look at her past work and the paths she took. I thought about asking her to talk about her fabulous work on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bantjes.com\/work\/tales-of-the-brothers-grimm-drawings-by-natalie-frank\/\"><em>Tales of the Brothers Grimm<\/em><\/a> book with drawings by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.natalie-frank.com\/\">Natalie Frank<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nataliepainter4\">nataliepainter4<\/a>), but figured if she hadn\u2019t mentioned it, there might have been a reason she wasn\u2019t including it. Turns out, it would\u2019ve been fine. Next time, I\u2019ll ask.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/colorado.aiga.org\">AIGA<\/a>-sponsored (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/aigacolorado\">aigacolorado<\/a>) after party was at a large bar with pool tables. I didn\u2019t play pool, though it had come up in conversation the night before.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/typecon.com\/conference\/typecon2015\/program\">Conference Talks<\/a><\/h2>\n<p><a name=\"friday\"><\/a><strong>Friday, 14 August 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.typecon.com\/speakers\/mary-mashburn\">Mary Mashburn<\/a>, of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mica.edu\/About_MICA\/People\/Faculty\/Faculty_List_by_Last_Name\/Mary_Mashburn.html\">Maryland Institute College of Art [MICA]<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mica_news\">mica_news<\/a>)\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.typecastpress.com\">Typecast Press<\/a>,\u00a0showed some of the great history of iconic jazz and R&amp;B posters in <em>Life Lessons from Globe Poster,<\/em>\u00a0including lovely posters from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mica.edu\/Browse_Art\/Globe_Poster_Collection.html\">their collection<\/a> of B.B.King, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, and many others. MICA now keeps Globe alive and in production. Some folk I know went to MICA including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.erinellis.com\">Erin Ellis<\/a> (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rrrellis\">rrrellis<\/a>) and <a href=\"http:\/\/shiva-n.com\/\">Shiva\u00a0Nallaperumal<\/a> (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/shiva__n\">shiva__n<\/a>). A fun exploration into some of the history and his path to resurrect the Hershey fonts using the original data points combined with modern OpenType font technology. Rick Griffith (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rickgriffith\">rickgriffith<\/a>) of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.morematter.com\">MATTER<\/a> (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/matter\">matter<\/a>) was the DJ for music in the lot. I ended up dancing a little with a few partners. It was great to catch up some more with <a href=\"http:\/\/rogerblack.com\">Roger Black<\/a> (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RogerBlack\">RogerBlack<\/a>) on the way to the airport the next morning; thanks, Roger.<\/p>\n<p>TypeCon always energizes me. There were some fruitful business discussions, too.
