I believe attendance was around 400.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: right;\" title=\"dec2001-jeffk-longhair.png\" src=\"http:\/\/slantedhall.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/dec2001-jeffk-longhair.png\" alt=\"Jeff with long hair. Portrait by Rachel Rausch Johnson\" width=\"73\" height=\"111\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Unexpected connections and overlap:<\/strong> Bob Colby, who founded TypeCon, attended. He\u2019s from the Boston area. I kept thinking he looked familiar. Oh, right. We were both at various Boston rock shows in the early to mid 1990s, when I was part of the Boston music scene. And we have at least one good friend in common, whom I had just spoken to earlier the same day. While <a href=\"https:\/\/delvefonts.com\/bio_withrington.html\">Delve Withrington<\/a> (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/delvefonts\">delvefonts<\/a>) and I were walking back from MassArt after the Wednesday evening talk by Alex Trochut<strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0we realized we had also lived in Boston and were likely at some of the same local concerts. Amazing how my brain knew exactly where to go to navigate the T (metro) to change lines, though it had been 20 years since I had moved away. Immediately upon arrival at the conference hotel, I ran into friends. Georg Seifert of <a href=\"https:\/\/glyphsapp.com\/\">Glyphs<\/a> (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/glyphsapp\">glyphsapp<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/delvefonts.com\/bio_withrington.html\">Delve Withrington<\/a> (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/delvefonts\">delvefonts<\/a>) were chatting. After some conversation and grabbing a shower, Georg and I wandered to the nearby Jaho Coffee Roaster &amp; Wine Bar (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jahocoffee\">jahocoffee<\/a>) to catch up and talk about projects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As part of catching up with friends in Boston, I dropped by <a href=\"http:\/\/wmbr.org\">WMBR<\/a>\u00a088.1 FM\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wmbr\">wmbr<\/a>),\u00a0MIT\u2019s radio station, to visit musician <a href=\"http:\/\/kenfield.org\">Ken Field<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/revsnakeens\">revsnakeens<\/a>) during his weekly radio show <a href=\"http:\/\/wmbr.org\/newedge\/\">The New Edge<\/a>\u00a0(Tuesdays, 2\u20134pm ET). Turns out he also had a guest gig with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lilypadinman.com\/home\/2017\/8\/22\/aperitivo-trio-friends\">Aperitivo Trio &amp; Friends<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lilypadinman.com\/home\/2017\/8\/22\/aperitivo-trio-friends\">The Lilypad<\/a> (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lilypadinman\">lilypadinman<\/a>)\u00a0in Inman Square, Cambridge, MA that evening. After catching up with a dear friend for dinner, I walked to the fabulous concert. Georg also attended. Aperitivo Trio consisted of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/lucentmusic.com\">Ara Sarkissian<\/a> (piano), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blickmusic.com\">Andy Blickenderfer<\/a> (bass) and <a href=\"https:\/\/fabiopirozzolo.com\">Fabio Pirozzolo<\/a> (percussion). Guests were <a href=\"http:\/\/kenfield.org\">Ken Field<\/a> (saxophone and flute) and\u00a0Palestinian oud player\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.baselzayed.com\">Basel Zayed<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/basel_zayed\">basel_zayed<\/a>). Georg and I walked to Harvard Square. My friend Marah joined us for a late dinner.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><a name=\"wednesday\"><\/a>Wednesday: Workshops, 23 August 2017<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, I sat in on the Glyphs workshops to help out. While locating the workshops, I met <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chiharutanaka.com\">Chiharu Tanaka<\/a>,\u00a0another bay area type designer, working with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psyops.com\/about\/\">PSY\/OPS Type Foundry<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/psyopstype\">psyopstype<\/a>). It was also wonderful to run into Qiu Yin and Ming Wei from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foundertype.com\">FounderType<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/foundertype\">foundertype<\/a>), China, again. The morning was on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/typecon.com\/conferences\/typecon2017\/workshops#truetype-hinting\">TrueType Hinting in Glyphs: Optimize Your TTFs for the Screen<\/a> with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.typecon.com\/speakers\/lisa-schultz\">Lisa Schultz<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chofrosubo\">chofrosubo<\/a>)\u00a0of <a href=\"https:\/\/schriftlabor.at\">Schriftlabor<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/schriftlabor\">schriftlabor<\/a>). An <a href=\"http:\/\/typecon.com\/conferences\/typecon2017\/workshops#glyphs-feedback\">Open Feedback Session:\u00a0Q &amp; A with the Developer of Glyphs<\/a>\u00a0with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.typecon.com\/speakers\/georg-seifert\">Georg Seifert<\/a> (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/glyphsapp\">glyphsapp<\/a>)\u00a0followed in the afternoon. It was fun to catch up with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.typeco.com\">James Grisehaber<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/typeco\">typeco<\/a>), talking about type, Glyphs, wood type, and <a href=\"https:\/\/p22.com\">P22<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/P22TypeFoundry\">P22TypeFoundry<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday evening: <a href=\"https:\/\/alextrochut.com\">Alex Trochut<\/a> (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alextrochut\">alextrochut<\/a>) talked about his creative process in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.typecon.com\/conferences\/typecon2017\/events#wednesday-trochut\"><em>Non-verbal Communication and the Written Medium<\/em><\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/massart.edu\/\">MassArt<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MassArt\">MassArt<\/a>),\u00a0presented by the <a href=\"http:\/\/tdc.org\/\">Type Directors Club<\/a> (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/typedirectors\">typedirectors<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong><a name=\"thursday\"><\/a>Thursday: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.typecon.com\/conferences\/typecon2017\/education\">Type &amp; Design Education Forum<\/a>, 24 August 2017<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.typecon.com\/speakers\/constanza-pacher\">Constanza Pacher<\/a>\u00a0talked about\u00a0<em>The Role of Experimentation in Teaching and Learning Typography, <\/em>sharing some of the\u00a0student typography projects that explored \u201cnon-linear representations of the text with the goal of enriching the reading.\u201d Future plans include incorporating more language and linguistics into the Typography II class of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macewan.ca\/wcm\/SchoolsFaculties\/FFAC\/Programs\/DesignStudies\/Academics\/ProgramofStudy\/index.htm\">MacEwan University\u2019s Design Studies program<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MacEwanU\">MacEwanU<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<em>Flexing Rather Than Finding Your Typographic Muscle<\/em>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.typecon.com\/speakers\/aoife-mooney\">Aoife Mooney<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/aoifemooney\">aoifemooney<\/a>), the North America coordinator for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.istd.org.uk\">International Society of Typograhic Designers<\/a> (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ISTDworldwide\">ISTDworldwide<\/a>), and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.typecon.com\/speakers\/jillian-coorey\">Jillian Coorey<\/a> (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jscoorey\">jscoorey<\/a>), both of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.edu\/vcd\">Kent State University<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VCDKent\">VCDKent<\/a>)\u00a0talked about how they used the ISTD <a href=\"https:\/\/www.istd.org.uk\/education\/2018-student-briefs\">student assessment briefs<\/a> in their own teaching curriculum. The 2018 briefs are available now with assessment planned for 13 April 2018.\u00a0The article they both wrote on <em><a href=\"https:\/\/typographica.org\/on-typography\/building-a-global-community-of-typographic-practice\/\">Building a global community of typographic practice<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(on @<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Typographica\">Typographica<\/a>) is worth a read and goes into more detail.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.typecon.com\/speakers\/tyler-galloway\">Tyler Galloway<\/a>\u00a0talked about applying Postman and Weingartner\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Inquiry_education\">inquiry method<\/a>\u201d (from their book <em>Teaching as a Subversive Activity <\/em>published in 1969)\u00a0to undergraduate graphic design study. \u201cLearning by questioning, students pursue their own discovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.typecon.com\/speakers\/yoon-soo-lee\">Yoon Soo Lee<\/a>\u00a0talked about <em>Mud Pies, Critical Thinking, and the Addiction of Aesthetics.<\/em>\u00a0\u201cA mud pie is\u00a0image making without a goal.\u00a0First rule of mud pies: postpone judgment. Second rule of mud pies: quantity is my friend. Third rule of mud pies: there are no rules. Really. There are no rules. It\u2019s a mud pie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.typecon.com\/speakers\/jean-francois-porchez\">Jean Fran\u00e7ois Porchez<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jfporchez\">jfporchez<\/a>)\u00a0&amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.typecon.com\/speakers\/stephane-elbaz\">St\u00e9phane Elbaz<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/stephaneelbaz\">stephaneelbaz<\/a>)\u00a0talked about creating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.typeparis.com\">TypeParis<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TypeParis\">TypeParis<\/a>) in\u00a0<em>Designing a Typeface Design Programme.<\/em> \u201cWe revisited the long tradition of type design study that started in France in the 1970s to design a summer course. The idea is to fill the gap between one year programmes and short workshops. The programme is in English and mixes traditional drawing and calligraphy techniques, type history, and modern software practices.\u201d Here\u2019s Q&amp;A with three TypeParis 2016 attendees\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nymark.me\">Andreas Nymark<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/andreasnymark\">andreasnymark<\/a>), <a href=\"http:\/\/jocelynand.com\">Jocelyn Anderson<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jocelynand_\">jocelynand_<\/a>) and <a href=\"http:\/\/kennethormandy.com\/\">Kenneth Ormandy<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kennethormandy\">kennethormandy<\/a>)\u2014asking \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.typeparis.com\/news\/what-did-you-learn-at-typeparis-4\/\">What did you learn at TypeParis?<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In <em>Counter-space: Finding Creativity Within the Details<\/em>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.typecon.com\/speakers\/andrea-leksen\">Andrea Leksen<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/leksendesign\">leksendesign<\/a>) talked about integrating \u201cthe important typographic details with an exploration of creativity within type\u201d\u00a0in her typography curriculum. Early on, students created an illustrative initial cap that used imagery to match the meaning of the body text. The students created some fun initial caps that helped in telling the story and would be nice to see set in books.<\/p>\n<p>I missed some of the talks due to good conversations with old friends. I was especially sad to miss a couple talks at the end of the day:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.metanewhousedesign.com\">Meta Newhouse<\/a>\u2019s (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/metanew\">metanew<\/a>) presentation on\u00a0<em>Tipo e Cinema<\/em> since it involved the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tipoteca.it\/en\/\">Tipoteca Italiana Museum<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Tipoteca\">Tipoteca<\/a>) archives that I hope to explore, someday; and, <a href=\"http:\/\/carolinadebartolo.com\">Carolina de Bartolo<\/a>\u2019s (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/carodebartolo\">carodebartolo<\/a>) talk on the redesign of the second edition of <a href=\"http:\/\/explorationsintypography.com\"><em>Explorations in Typography<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: right;\" title=\"TypeCon 2017: Keynote speaker Martina Flor\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/788\/27085955438_93cfec7aac_n.jpg\" alt=\"TypeCon 2017 Keynote speaker Martina Flor\" width=\"320\" height=\"151\" border=\"0\" \/> <strong><a name=\"keynote\"><\/a>Thursday: Keynote with Martina Flor!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s always fun to hear\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.martinaflor.com\">Martina Flor<\/a>\u00a0(@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/martinaflor\">martinaflor<\/a>) speak. Great to have her opening the conference showing some of the projects she created\u2014e.g., postcards as marketing,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.letteringvscalligraphy.com\">Lettering vs. Calligraphy<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.martinaflorgoods.com\/books\/\"><em>The Golden Secrets of Lettering<\/em><\/a>\u00a0book (available in German, Spanish, and English with French on the way)\u2014and commissioned projects such as Spanish publishing house <a href=\"http:\/\/australeditorial.com%20\">Austral<\/a>\u2019s (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Austral_ed\">Austral_ed<\/a>)\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.martinaflor.com\/portfolio\/alicia-en-el-pais-de-las-maravillas\/\"><em>Alice in Wonderland<\/em><\/a>. A. Dwiggins, Hermann P\u00fcterschein, and the Fictional Society of Calligraphers<\/em>. His book <a href=\"https:\/\/letterformarchive.org\/dwiggins\"><em>W. A. Dwiggins: A Life in Design<\/em><\/a>, published by the <a href=\"https:\/\/letterformarchive.org\/publications\/\">Letterform Archive<\/a>, looks to be fabulous. I saw some of the proofs during a visit. This is the first of books the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/letterformarchive.org\">Archive<\/a>\u00a0will be publishing. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.typecon.com\/speakers\/jill-pichotta\">Jill Pichotta<\/a> (@<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jillpichotta\">jillpichotta<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll try to dig up the names of those who showed typefaces for feedback. Plus, there\u2019s the attached <a href=\"http:\/\/brewcafeboston.com\">Brew Cafe<\/a>\u00a0for food and drinks. If I still lived in Boston, I suspect I\u2019d end up there periodically to work on my type design projects. During the party, the had a blind trivia contest and encouraged people to create drawings that represented Boston. I ended up winning the reproduction of the lovely book\u00a0<em>S<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rizzoliusa.com\/book.php?isbn=9780847858682\">pecimens of Chromatic Wood Type, Borders, &amp;c.: The 1874 Masterpiece of Colorful Typography<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>by @<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rizzoliusa.com\/book.php?isbn=9780847858682\">Rizzoli_Books<\/a>.
